Today’s just been one of those days. You wanna cry, because we lost someone special in Dave Brockie, a creative genius who endured quite a bit for his art. But at the same time, Dave wouldn’t want you to be sad.

Either way, Facebook has been running wild with remembrances and memorials to the man who led Gwar and concocted it’s crazy storyline. Here’s a collection of words from around the metal world, in reaction to Dave Brockie’s sudden and unexpected death.

Shadows Fall’s Brian Fair:

Woke up today in Romania to hear the awful news that Dave (Oderus) of Gwar had passed away. We were lucky to spend many days on tour together and share many beers and stories. He was truly one of a kind and one of the nicest guys in an industry not always known for nice guys. A road dog to the extreme, he changed the face of what a punk rock show could be. Head is still spinning. We lost another legend. May he rest in peace below the ice fields of Antarctica. Man, this just sucks.

Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe:

I got a very sad call tonight from my buddy Chris Bopst, who was one of the original members of GWAR — my friend Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus, the singer of GWAR, has left the building & taken off back to his home planet. He was 50 years old. I do not know details of why he died yet, just that he passed away at home & his roommates found him.

When someone dies, a lot of the time people will say “Oh, he was a unique person, really one of a kind, a true original” — most of these people no idea of what they are talking about — they obviously had never met Dave. Dave TRULY WAS ONE OF A KIND — I can’t think of ANYONE even remotely like him. That’s VERY HARD TO SAY.

My band learned how to become a real touring band from GWAR- they gave us out first shot at this thing. I learned many things from Dave, many of which I am eternally grateful for, and some of which I am deeply ashamed of. I took this picture at his birthday party a few months ago — Dave kissing his Oderous birthday cake.

Right now, if I were to truly honor Dave in the way HE would do it if it were ME that had died, I would make a completely tasteless joke about his death. But I do not have the stomach for that — Dave would, but not me. He never put much stock in “limits.” Richmond, VA has lost one of its most creative people. This is a crying shame to me.

Thank you Brockie, for all the crazy shit you did- thank God you existed, so you could do it and I didn’t have to. It was an honor to know you, to be your Shaky Slave, to serve in the Blood Vomits along side you (let’s ride!), and to be soaked by your sweet cuttlefish. RIP Dave Brockie. Oderous, enjoy your trip back home.

Ringworm:

Sad news. Whether you liked Gwar or not, here’s no denying the great talent, creativity, humor and unabashed social commentary that Dave contributed to this shitty planet. He’s going to be missed by many. RIP Dave.

Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records:

Today is a very sad day, goodbye my dear friend Dave Brockie. You were truly amazing and talented, you really made earth a better place.

Darkest Hour:

Our heart is with the good dudes in Gwar and the rock community in RVA, This is just devastating. Dave was one of the most bad ass OG’s we have ever toured with. No words can contain his awesomeness and his memory will live on with us and his music. So honored to have been able to share the stage with him and the boys. On to the next dimension Dave..but those of us here we will miss you for eternity!

Revocation:

R.I.P. Dave Brockie may the memory of Oderus Urungus live on in the hearts of all the slaves and scumdogs. Crank some Gwar today in Dave’s honor

The Red Chord:

Dave Brockie was an all around amazing man. We were honored with spending 20+ combined weeks on tour with Gwar. Such an incredible and talented entertainer. Dave and everyone in that camp have always been so good to all of us. What a terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, band and friends down in Richmond.

Hatebreed:

RIP Dave Brockie! Thanks for all the good times. Our condolences to the entire Gwar family and all their friends & fans.

Municipal Waste:

Our hearts go out to our brothers in Gwar and their familys. We’ve lost count of how many amazing times we’ve shared with Dave and are deeply saddened by this loss. Thanks for everything you’ve done for us over the years Dave. We wouldnt be where we are today without you.

Shai Hulud:

Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and countless fans of Dave Brockie. He gave us all something unique that will truly never be forgotten. As lifelong Gwar fanatics, Shai Hulud collectively mourns the loss. Dave Brockie, you are loved and will be missed.
